Depending on number of days of your staying, we can recommend the following places:
# North coast
Portugal is not only Lisbon and Porto. Up north we have wonderful villas, close to the river and sea, that are a most place to visit. We recommend to visit Viana do Castelo – a small city with very characteristic streets and building. It just 90 km on the North of Porto (around 1h drive). In Viana we recommend to park for the night on the “cabedelo” – just where the river meets the sea.
When in Viana, you should also visit Ponte de Lima and Ponte da Barca. With a 30 min – 1hour drive to the interior, you will find wonderful small villas just near the river with fantastic places to have very nice meals for few euros and to park the motorhome and enjoy the nature.
If you wish to go up north, we strongly recommend to stay on Caminha parking (on of the best campsites in Europe). Its located just near the river and sea and you can take the opportunity to visit Caminha. If you wish you can also take the ferry to the north of Spain (just cross the river).
If you have more time you can also adventure yourself to Vigo, a very interesting Spanish mid-size city.
If you wish to find more about the Oporto wine culture, you need to visit Régua (1,5 hour drive). It located near the Douro river and it’s close to the main vineyards. On Régua you have a public space for motorhomes that only charges 3 euros for full service.
If you prefer the nature, you must visit the Natural Park of Gerês (URL HIDDEN) home for dozens of amazing waterfalls. You have 3 campsites to choose from to spend the night.
If you like to take a walk by foot, we strongly recommend to visit Paiva Walkways (URL HIDDEN) It’s a delightful 10km walkway that goes along the river and into the mountains, located just about 1h driving from Porto.
If you like bicycling, that you can take advantage of the bike lanes that connect Porto till the city of Aveiro (60 km south).
# South coast
If you have some time (3 days minimum) and wish to go till Lisbon, the we recommend to take the A17 highway and stop in Aveiro (a nice city with water canals and a special egg based sweet), visit or sleep in Figueira da Foz (130km) – with a beautiful white sand beach, go to Nazaré (215km) - popular for big wave surfing and with incredible ocean views; or Ericeira (60km north Lisbon) – a very nice fishing town also known as the European capital of surfing.
We provide suggestions on where to park in each place to take the most advantage of your staying.
# Lisbon and south of Tejo river
If you are planning to stay for a week, why not visit Lisbon (Portugal capital and currently considered on of the best cities to visit) and even go to the “Costa Vincentina” – with dozens of sea side fantastic villas (like Zambujeira do Mar, Brejão, Odeceixe, etc.) with a very nice gastronomy and with a handful of places perfect to stay with a motorhome.
If you go even more south you can visit Algarve (260 km south of Lisbon) – which have the best white sand beaches
